Diagramming Generalštab:
An exercise in experimental preservation

Proposal for the Serbian Pavilion for the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2025

Diagramming Generalštab: an exercise in experimental preservation focuses on opening the question of how heritage can continue to live in alternative forms and receive extra-disciplinary interpretations in the architectural exhibition space through the example of Nikola Dobrovic's Generalštab.

Generalštab, Yugoslavia's symbol of modern architecture, damaged during the NATO bombing, is facing its transformation, which opens the debate on conserving its current state, not only in terms of physical structure but also as a collective spatial and individual memory.

The exhibition introduces a diagrammatic encounter with the Generalštab through a non-linear experience of its past-present-future, examining new conservation methods and archiving tangible and intangible architectural heritage elements. The spatial setting includes, on the one hand, steel structures that emphasise the symmetry and monumentality of the Generalštab, and on the other, a 3D wax print of the ruins to show the fragility of this building. Through the materiality of the exhibition, the contrasts and paradoxes of the lifetime of the Generalstab are emphasised. Technologies accompanying the exhibition, such as LIDAR scans, VR experiences and digital archives, introduce reflections on experimental forms of conservation. Through this exhibition and its accompanying ones, the goal is to open a debate among elements on alternative approaches to preserving heritage, new ways of encountering it and the importance of memory.
